Summary
Freevpnhosting is another free VPN service that performs well but lacks in stability and security. Depending on your needs however, the user-friendly service might just be enough.
VPN Service Description
freevpnhosting.com is a Free VPN service, as their name provides, that touts itself as being the ”world’s most trusted (…) and secure” Free VPN Provider. The service doesn’t seem to belong to a registered company, but it is rather maintained by an individual from Hong Kong, according to domain whois data.
Features
Free VPN Hosting offers an instant free VPN account dispatch for all users, without the need to register with personal details or e-mail addresses, which is nice – privacy wise.
While the latter is true and access to the free VPN service is very fast with no setup required, all users must go to their website before connecting to the VPN to get the current password, as it is automatically generated on a regular basis. That’s an effective method of generating site traffic, therefore more money from ads because premium hosting services don’t come cheap (see below)
Users can access this service only through PPTP VPN connections. This works with any major operating system on both computers and portable devices such as tablets and smartphones using only the included software in the OS. The service is compatible with Windows PCs and Mac, iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch) and Android devices. Keep in mind that PPTP VPN is not the most secure VPN protocol, but if you are not going to transfer your most sensitive data through the PPTP VPN and rather use it to access media streaming services, its security level is just fine.
freevpnhosting.com allows their users to connect to a single U.S. based server, located in Chicago, using SingleHop, a premium, tier 1 hosting provider.
Speed
We tested their server from European locations and the results are consistent with speeds between 0.3 and 3 Mbit/sec download and 0.5 Mbit/sec uploads.
CacheFly Speed Tests (download):
test 1: 2 Mbit/s
test 2: 1.5 Mbit/s
test 3: 3.6 mbit/s
Softlayer Speed Tests (download/upload):
test 1 (Washington): 0.5 Mbit/s down and 0.4 Mbit/s up
test 2 (Dallas): 0.3 Mbit/s down and 0.5 Mbit/s up
test 3 (San Jose): 0.3 Mbit/s down and 0.4 Mbit/s up
test 4 (Seatle): 0.4 Mbit/s down and 0.6 Mbit/s up
Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 172ms, Maximum = 190ms, Average = 177ms
Unfortunately, during our tests, the connection was dropped a few times after 5 minutes of on-line usage. The server was probably under heavy load
Conclusions
While this service offers a hassle-free VPN connection process (no registration required) and it is compatible with most devices and OSes, it does take some low ratings in the stability, speed and security (only PPTP VPN which is not too secure) sections and only gets a 6 out of 10 Rating. The best about this provider is that it is free, and it’s worth mentioning that the hosting provider is a premium one.
