OpenVPN for Android is a 3rd party OpenVPN client available for free. It’s only the app that is available for free, you still need to have a VPN account with a VPN service to connect. The good news is that it is compatible with all VPN providers that use OpenVPN as one of their protocols. What you need from your VPN provider is the OpenVPN config files to add in the OpenVPN for Android app. What we like the most about this app is that it is actively maintained and has many options you can tweak, like: using a proxy, showing a verbose log, connect automatically on boot or network change, pause the VPN during stand-by to save battery life and more.
Being a 3rd party VPN client that works with any OpenVPN service, it can be compared to OpenVPN GUI for Windows, but it is much better and provides more feature than many applications you must pay for. We like OpenVPN for Android the most and PIA’s Android App is a custom-built of it. Which means that it has the great features of OpenVPN for Android plus their customization: a list of VPN locations to connect to, a kill switch and port forwarding. And you are also able to easily change the encryption options from the Options menu.
Freedome of F-Secure
F-Secure is a well-known Anti-Virus maker who recently launched Freedome, a mobile VPN service available for Android and iOS using the same OpenVPN protocol. We like the simplicity of their app and its visual design. It doesn’t allow to customize anything about the connection, like the encryption ciphers, but it gets the work done: you can connect with one or two taps and can easily switch location without importing any VPN profiles. And the best part about this app is that it is available for free on a 7-day trial. The paid service is available for $5 / month or $28 / year. That’s extremely cheap if you ask us.
Will you update the list? I think there are great new providers in the market llike Atlas VPN per say, which is free to use and does most of the features that a premium provider would do
